Language Arts: Classic Story Comic Strips

Here's a fun project that will gives students practice in summarizing and outlining. Use in conjunction with the reading of a classic book.

* See the comic strips below based on chapters from "Heidi" and "Rikki Tikki Tavi".

Supplies:

Lined writing paper
Blank Comic Strip Sheet (print on white paper)
Pencils with erasers
Colored pencils or markers
Black markers

Directions:

1. Choose a favorite chapter from a classic story book, preferably one WITHOUT illustrations.

2. Number from 1-6 on 2 pieces of lined paper, leaving 3-4 spaces between numbers.

3. On the first page, write out what will happen in each of the six boxes of the comic strip.

4. On the second page, write what will be said in each box.

5. Now draw your comic strip based on what you have written. Put dialogue in "bubbles" and be sure to print.

6. Color in everything (except the bubbles) with the colored pencils or markers.

7. Outline everything with a black marker. Go over the print with the marker, too.

8. Creatively write the title of the book and chapter number on the top of the page and your name on the bottom.

* Here are the comics made by some of my elementary age students:

By Noah, 1st grade

By Jo, 3rd grade
