Note: ALWAYS refer to the photo reference below at EVERY step!

1. Using the side of the white pastel, rub the bottom 2/3 of the paper. Make it particularly white toward the top.

2. Rub well with a cotton ball or tissue. Use a side to side motion.

3. Using the vine or willow charcoal, sketch a cross to place the ship in the center of the page.

4. Sketch the shape of the boat's hull (not the reflection).

5. Sketch the masts and the flag.

6. Add the ropes, but do not add every strand. (You will do that with the
charcoal pencil.) You may want to use a ruler for these.

7. Sketch the shape of the reflection in the water.

8. Using the charcoal pencil, fill in the shape of the boat. Any any other details that hadn't been drawn yet.

9. Now fill in the reflection shape.

10. Using the tortillion, carefully smudge the charcoal in the reflection shape. Blur the edges gently and make the straight lines "wavy".

11. Using the charcoal-covered tortillion, add the dark waves in the water. Gently smudge in the horizon area behind the ship.

12. This drawing would look best mounted on black paper, or matted with black mat board.
