MEDIEVAL HISTORY PROJECT: Illuminated Monogram

If you happen to be studying the Middle Ages in your history program, this project is a fun way to learn about the beautiful manuscripts created by medieval monks.

Supplies:

* Word processing software program, such as Microsoft Word
* Printer
* White paper
* Colored pencils
* Black, thin marker
* Pencil
* Ruler
* Gold metallic paint and small paint brush (optional)

Directions:

1. Create a new document in Word. Change font type to "Old English Text" and change the font size to 500.

2. Type in the initial that you wish to illuminate, in upper case. Print off this page.

   

3. Draw a square around the letter (use a ruler and pencil).

4. Draw an inner square inside the first square to create a border.

5. Draw decorative shapes in the border and in the letter. See the photos below for inspiration.

   

6. Color in the entire sheet with colored pencils

7. Outline everything with the black felt tip pen.

Optional: Paint details and borders with gold metallic paint for an authentic look!
