Sacagawea Portrait

We can honor this great lady who served as a guide in the Lewis and Clark expedition with a pencil or charcoal portrait. It's quite easy when you use a drawing grid - a drawing tool that has been used for centuries!

With the special printables for this project, you will find drawing a pencil portrait easier than your think!

(This project can be done equally well with either charcoal or graphite pencil.)

1. Using a #2 pencil, draw the portrait onto the grid paper. Just draw ONE BOX AT A TIME. Use the grid lines to guide you as you go. Do not shade. Just draw the outlines of the shapes. (Use the "Sketch" printable to help you see the outlines.)

2. Blacken the back of the grid paper with your #2 pencil. Color it all in thoroughly and rub lightly with a tissue.

3. Tape the grid paper (blackened side down) onto the good drawing paper.

4. Pressing hard, draw over all of the lines that you originally drew. This will transfer it to the good paper.

5. Discard the grid paper.

6. Erase any smudges on the good paper.

7. Using the charcoal or graphite pencil, shade in the drawing, using the "Final Drawing" printable and the photo reference (below) as your guide.

8. Be sure to add texture to the hair and clothing.

9. This would look nice mounted on a larger piece of black construction paper.
