Pose-able Alien Sculpture

Looking for a REALLY fun project for your kids or students? Using pipe cleaners and Crayola Model Magic clay, you can create these colorful, pose-able aliens. The galaxy is the limit for creativity with this project!

Ages 7 and up.

Special thanks to one of my students, Noah B, for making the example for this sculpture. Great job, Noah!

Supplies:

Directions:

1. Create an armature out of the pipe cleaners to act as the alien's skeleton. This will give it support and pose-ability. If you want your alien to have long fingers, make them out of the pipe cleaners now so that they will be strong.

2. Choose one color of clay and mold it onto the armature from head to foot.

Optional: Swirl two colors together first, then add to the armature for a tie-dyed effect!

3. Using two more colors, add the following:

  • facial features
  • insignia on chest
  • boots
  • arm bands
  • helmet
  • belt (with buckle)
  • laser guns or other spaceman accessories

This is where the students can get really creative!

4. Pose your alien however you please. In an hour or so, the clay will harden a bit, but still have a spongy feeling. Posing it after this point will create cracks.
