Creative "Writing"

Have some fun creating your own alphabet using a theme that represents you or an area of interest. See some ideas from my own alphabet!

Ages 8 and up.

Supplies:

  • White paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Black felt tip pen

Note: This is more an "idea" than a project. Be creative and use any medium you like for rendering.

1. Decide on a theme for your alphabet - something that you like such as:

  • A favorite sport - hockey, baseball, football, soccer, etc.
  • An activity - ballet, tap dancing, baton twirling, camping
  • A school subject - science, history, art, writing
  • Nature themes - mammels, fish , birds, flowers, plants, insects, etc.
  • Famous locations - France, Italy, China, Japan, Mexico, etc.

2. Using a ruler and pencil, lightly draw lines across your paper to serve as guides for keeping your letters all the same height.

3. Have fun and create! Draw the letters out of items that represent your theme, using your pencil. Color them in with the colored pencils or markers. Outline with the black felt tip pen.

Look at my letters below to see how I made my theme of "painting" work for these letters:

4. You can then write a word using the letters that you have created. I wrote "ILLUSTRATE" with mine:
