Linear perspective can be baffling to younger students,
but it doesn't hurt to introduce it in a way that's easy
and fun.
This graphite pencil project teaches "one-point perspective"
and also allows some creative freedom. Students can put whatever
they like in the armchair - a monster, a toy, or anything
that suits them.
Ages 8 and up.

Note: If all you have is a #2 pencil, a pink eraser, and 8.5"
x 11" copy paper, you can still do this project. Just vary your
pressure for the lighter
and darker areas using your #2 pencil.
Instructions:
1. Using a triangle ruler, draw a rectangle on your white
paper that is 8 inches across and 9 inches down.
2. Using a 2H pencil*, draw a dot that is centered horizontally
and a little above center, vertically. This dot is the vanishing
point.
* I suggest using a 2H pencil because it is light, and these
lines must be erased later.
3. Using the side of the triangle ruler and a 2H pencil,
draw four guidelines as shown. Don't draw these hard - they
will
need
to be erased
later.
These guidelines help us to see that all lines that
depict depth radiate from the vanishing point.
4. Using an HB pencil, draw the outline of the armchair,
as shown.
5. Add the outlines of the cushions and seams, as shown.
Notice where they intersect with the guidelines.
6. Erase all of the guidelines and the vanishing point.
7. Using your HB pencil, draw an object, alien, monster,
toy - or whatever creative element you would like to add
to your drawing.
8. Shade in the chair using all of your pencils:
2B - Very dark areas
HB - Medium dark areas
2H - Light Areas
Lift out highlights with your kneaded eraser if needed.
