Contour Line Relief Painting

This easy project combines a contour line drawing exercise with a fun watercolor relief technique using oil pastels. It's great for teaching younger students to use watercolors since the oil pastels keep the paint from going "out of the lines".

Ages 7 and up.

Supplies:

  • Watercolor paper, 9" x 12"
  • Yellow oil pastels
  • Watercolor pan paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Can of water
  • Paper towels
  • Large stuffed animal
  • Accessories for the animal like hats, scarves, sunglasses, small t-shirts, wigs, hair extentions, etc.

Instructions:

1. Dress up your stuffed animal any way you like, using the accessories listed above. Be creative and have fun!

2. Prop up your dressed animal so that you can draw it well.

3. Using a yellow oil pastel, slowly draw the outline of the animal starting from the top and working your way down. (For a longer explanation of contour line drawing, go here.) Make sure each shape is fully enclosed.

4. Paint your animal with watercolor paints, using many colors. The oil pastel lines will resist the paint and make staying in the lines very easy. Be sure to add a background. I used blue and green mixed for mine.
