Paper and Pastel Project

Try this simple mixed medium project that uses cut or torn paper and pastels. Using good quality pastel paper is best, but kids may like to try it with construction paper.

Ages 7 and up.

Supplies:

  • Pastel paper, such as Canson Mi-Tienes, in blue, orange, red, dark green and light green
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Soft Pastel set

Instructions:

1. Using glasses and cans as templates, draw circles of various sizes onto the orange and red paper. Cut or tear them out and glue these down on the blue paper as shown. Choose any arrangement that suits you.

(See bottom of the page for the torn paper version.)

2. Draw simple leaf shapes of various sizes onto the dark and light green papers. Cut or tear them out and glue them over the oranges, in an arrangement that you like.

(See bottom of the page for the torn paper version.)

3. Using the broad side of your pastel sticks, add some swipes of dark orange and red to the underside of each orange. Use a very dark green pastel to make swipes down the center of the leaves also.
4. Add some yellow highlights to the leaves as shown. You can be finished at this point if you like the rough look of the pastels.
5. Optional: Using your finger, smudge the pastel strokes to soften the look.
Here is what this project looks like using torn paper instead. I do not recommend that you blur the pastels to make the rough look consistent.
