Sculpting for Science

Animal Cell

by David Bauch, age 9

Do you want to take your next science lesson up a creative notch or too? Hands-on learning is a lot more effective (and fun) than staring at a text book diagram.

Try sculpting your next lesson to really drive home the data. Crayola Model Magic only sticks to itself, is light and foamy, and can be drawn on with markers before it's even hardened! Clean up is a breeze because it won't stick to carpeting. Just sweep or vacuum scraps up after class. Be sure to tightly wrap unused clay and keep airtight or it will harden.

Ages 7-12

Supplies:

  • Crayola Model Magic Clay in a variety of colors
  • Markers

Plant cell project:

After teaching your students the basic parts of a plant cell, you can create one using Model Magic and markers.

Here we labeled the various parts, including the vacuoles, which we made by pressing a coin into the clay to create a depression.

For a simple lesson plan on cells, try this.

Other ideas for science sculptures:

  • Organs of the digestive system
  • Parts of a flower
  • Skeletal Structures
  • Life cycle of a frog
