"Stained Glass" Watercolor Flowers

Try your hand at watercolor painting while creating a "stained glass" look with these delicate flowers. This project uses white glue to create the separations between colors. Good for ages 10 and up.

Supplies:

  • Set of watercolor paints
  • Watercolor brush
  • Watercolor paper, 9" x 12"
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Flower photo reference (see below)
  • Paper Towels
  • Can of water
  • Small bottle of white glue

Note: Remember to ALWAYS refer to the photo reference of the REAL flowers below at EVERY step!

1. Lightly draw circles on the page to represent the flower groupings seen in the reference below.

2. Draw circles within these circles to represent the petals of the individual flowers. Keep your hand loose and don't worry about details for now.

3. Erase the outer circles.

4. Lightly sketch in the leaves. Erase any overlapping lines.

5. Now, correct the outline of each petal and leaf. Look carefully at the flower reference below and do this step slowly!

6. Carefully apply a thin line of white glue over each line drawin. Allow to dry completely (overnight).

6. When the glue is COMPLETELY dry, paint the petals one by one by wetting the area first with water then dabbing in blue and pink paint and letting the colors bleed into each other.

7. Use the same techniques to paint the leaves, except use various shades of green. Try dropping in a little red and letting it mix with the green at one end of each leaf.

8. Paint the background black.
